Jeffrey A. Travis is an Associate in the Bakersfield office of Borton Petrini, LLP and heads its Intellectual Property practice group. Mr. Travis’ educational background is diverse where, after four intense years of studying the great books, he double-majored in math and science and western philosophy at St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. He received his J.D. from Whittier Law School in 2003 and is also a registered patent attorney with the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

Mr. Travis has been directly involved in the preparation and prosecution of scores of patents and trademarks, since his admission to the Patent Bar in October of 2002. The technical field for these patents have ranged from simple devices (simple circuit devices, consumer products) to more sophisticated software and mechanical programs and devices (digital encryption, online commerce). His experience includes filing patents in the United States and abroad.

He was also fortunate enough to begin his career as a law clerk for an intellectual property law firm in Orange County doing research and briefing work on a noted Supreme Court trademark case regarding the issue of incontestability and fair use. Since then, he has analyzed numerous trademarks for his clients and others preceding and after the commencement of litigation. Mr. Travis has also served as intellectual property opinion counsel, performed intellectual property due diligence audits, and has been directly involved with patent, trademark, trade secrets, and copyright infringement litigation across a broad range of subject matters.

Before his a career as an attorney, Mr. Travis was a software build and release engineer for an imaging company in Irvine, California. This experience has made him particularly adept and fond of all intellectual property issues related to software.
In addition to his love of intellectual property, Mr. Travis’ skills have broadened to include litigation support for construction, land use, and contract disputes. He also provides transactional expertise related to corporate formations, drafting of legal documents, and a keen knowledge of legal issues related to the internet and new technologies.

Apart from his dedication to his work, Mr. Travis has also volunteered at the Greater Bakersfield Legal Assistance, his church, and, most important, is devoted to his wife and six children.
