Calvin R. Stead is a Partner in the Bakersfield office of Borton Petrini, LLP. Cal’s urban planning background includes an undergraduate degree in zoology with a minor in organic chemistry and a master of science degree from the University of Texas. He has more than 12 years experience in air pollution chemistry, nuclear power plant chemistry and chemical toxicology. In 1986, Cal received his J.D. from the University of San Diego School of Law.

Cal’s areas of legal expertise include realtor errors and omissions, commercial and environmental litigation, land use planning, water law, and environmental and health care issues. Within the area of toxic tort, he has handled a vast array of cases, including vaccine reactions, asbestosis and cancer phobia, chemically induced asthma, pesticide and herbicide contamination, EMF and AIDS contamination and phobia claims.

He has consulted on and litigated complex CERCLA and RCRA cases. Major clients in the environmental area include ITT, Maxxam, Lederle Labs and American Cyanamid. Mr. Stead has also counseled and advised health care providers regarding Stark and anti-kickback and fraud claims as well as malpractice and medical staff issues.

Cal belongs to many professional organizations representative of both his scientific and legal expertise. Among these are the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, American Nuclear Society, Defense Research Institute, Defense Counsel Association, International Air Waste Management Association, the State Bar of California, and the American Institute of Planning. In addition, Cal has written many articles for California Defense magazine dealing with topics as diverse as pollution insurance and zoning and land use issues.

Cal stays as involved in his community as he is with his profession. Some of his community service activities include membership in the Bakersfield Rotary Club, membership on the Greater Bakersfield Government Review Council, and he serves on the Board of Directors of Project Clean Air. He was the 1996 president of the Sonoma County Taxpayers Association and is now on the Board of Directors of Kern Tax. He also is a member of the Board of Directors of the Building Industry Association in Kern County.

Cal is married to Elizabeth and has two children, Christina Nichole and John Frederick.
